Vashlovani is one of Georgia's most surprising landscapes — a semi-desert wilderness unlike anywhere else in the country. Dramatic canyons, open plains, mud volcanoes, rare wildlife, and vast horizons create a genuine feeling of exploration. This is where nature feels raw and untouched: the silence runs deep, the stars burn brighter, and every sunset feels personal. This seven-day overland expedition eases you in with the vineyards and hospitality of Kakheti, then heads off the asphalt entirely — following the Azerbaijan borderlands past a weathered abandoned aircraft, climbing Usakhelo Mountain for a 360-degree panorama, threading rugged canyons, and camping wild beneath skies untouched by light. You'll stand among the cracked earth of the Takhti-Tepha mud volcanoes, swim at the remote Dali Reservoir, and trace the Iori River through Chachuna to an ancient cave monastery. It's not a sightseeing trip; it's an expedition — and Vashlovani is not just a destination, it's an experience. Pricing is per person and varies by group size. Fully guided (our guide drives, everyone shares one vehicle): €1500 solo in a private vehicle, or from €1000 / €800 / €600 per person for 2, 3 or 4 travellers sharing. Prefer to drive yourself? The self-drive experience runs at €1690 per person (minimum 6 people, two sharing each car) and includes a 4×4 with a roof tent, kitchen equipment and car kit, plus a local guide in a 4×4 who knows the area. Note this is a protected border-zone area — bring your passport, and see the FAQ on permits.

Arrive in Tbilisi and transfer to your hotel. In the evening we explore the city's charming streets, discover its culture and history, and share a first glass of traditional Georgian wine together.

A gentle start to warm up for the adventure ahead. In the morning we collect our vehicles and set off for Kakheti, Georgia's famous wine region, for a wine degustation and a traditional "supra." Tonight we stay at a local winery among the vineyards — the perfect setting for authentic Georgian hospitality.

From the winery we head to Vashlovani National Park via Dedoplistskaro, entering a protected wilderness of dramatic canyons, unusual rock formations, and rare wildlife. Along the way we pass an old abandoned airfield where a weathered aircraft still stands — a surreal reminder of the past. Tonight we wild-camp inside the park.

We drive toward Black Mountain, past fields where local farmers work, and through a narrow canyon to Mijniskure and its rugged terrain. We climb Usakhelo Mountain for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama — the river below, and just beyond it, Azerbaijan. Continuing to Bear Gorge, the road is long and wildly scenic; at moments the vast, open landscape can feel like Africa. On the way we pass the canyon known as the "City of Swallows." The evening ends with a campfire and shared moments.

Today the adventure truly unfolds. We head toward the Dali Reservoir, the landscape shifting dramatically as we mostly follow the Azerbaijan border, passing Georgian border-police stations. We visit the Takhti-Tepha mud volcanoes, where cracked earth and strange terrain create a dramatic atmosphere, then wild-camp by the reservoir — where you can swim.

We slowly return toward civilization, exploring several remarkable spots in Chachuna National Park and visiting an ancient cave monastery along the way. If it rains, the route becomes even more exciting and challenging. Following the Iori River, the scenery gradually transforms, leaving you feeling far from and close to civilization at once. Tonight we stay in a Georgian village with a home-cooked dinner — and a shower.

Common questions

It's an adventurous overland expedition. The demands are the rugged off-road driving, the semi-desert heat and dust, and several nights of wild camping with limited facilities — not hard hiking. The walks are short. Come ready for remoteness and real wilderness.

No. On the guided trip your local guide handles all the driving, including the demanding off-road sections, and the camp is set up for you. Off-road experience only matters if you choose the self-drive option.

Four of the six nights are wild camping — inside Vashlovani, at Bear Gorge, and at Dali Reservoir. You also stay at a hotel in Tbilisi (Night 1), a winery in Kakheti (Night 2), and a village guesthouse with a shower (Night 6). All camping and kitchen equipment, including tents, sleeping bags and mats, is provided.

On the guided trip a solo traveller gets a private vehicle; groups of 2–4 share one fully equipped overland vehicle. The self-drive option runs for a minimum of six people with two sharing each 4×4. Tell us your group size in the enquiry.

On the fully guided trip our local guide drives and leads the whole expedition. The self-drive option lets you drive your own 4×4 (fitted with a roof tent and kitchen kit) in convoy with our guide, and runs for a minimum of six people at €1690 per person. Both follow the same route.

Vashlovani is a protected area in a border zone, which requires a national-park permit and a border-zone permit. We arrange these for you as part of the tour — you just need to bring a valid passport.

Yes. Much of the route follows the Azerbaijan border and passes Georgian border-police stations, so you must carry your passport. We handle the border-zone permits.

This is genuine semi-desert. Spring and autumn are pleasant; midsummer can be very hot. Bring plenty of water capacity, a sun hat, strong sun protection, and a dust buff. We carry water for the group, but come prepared for heat and sun.

It suits active families with older children or teenagers who are comfortable with long off-road drives, wild camping, heat and remoteness. Tell us your family's ages and we'll advise honestly.

Rain can make the semi-desert tracks muddy and challenging — sometimes that's part of the fun, sometimes it forces a change. Your guide monitors conditions and will adjust the route for safety when needed.

All accommodation on the route is included, along with camp meals cooked en route, the Kakheti wine degustation and supra, and the Day 6 village dinner. Meals not listed are not included. Your final confirmation will spell out exactly what's covered.

Travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is strongly recommended for this remote region. And note — like all our tours, the whole trip is a private departure for your own group only.
