Georgia's Wine Country
Kakheti stretches across eastern Georgia, cupped between the Greater Caucasus to the north and the Gombori Range to the south, opening onto the wide, vine-carpeted Alazani plain. It is the cradle of Georgian wine — qvevri winemaking here predates any other tradition by 8,000 years and is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. But Kakheti is far more than wine: the canyon labyrinths of Vashlovani in the far south-east push deep into semi-desert on the Azerbaijani border, and David Gareja's cave monastery complex spills across a mesa above the Iori steppe. Compact enough to explore in a few days, rich enough to spend a week.
