Some of Georgia's most spectacular landscapes are only reachable by 4x4 — and that's precisely why they feel like the end of the world in the best possible way. The Abano Pass road to Tusheti is one of the most dramatic mountain drives in Europe: steep, unpaved, and unforgettable. Highland Adjara hides forest tracks and remote mountain villages high above the Black Sea coast, where the tarmac gives out and the real country begins. And down in the far southeast, Vashlovani National Park opens into a completely different Georgia — semi-desert badlands, deep canyons, and open savanna that only a capable 4x4 can cross. Overlanding in Georgia means getting to places the hiking crowds haven't reached yet — and doing it with a guide who knows every turn, every mud patch, and every shortcut.

Jun – Sep
All high passes open — the best window for Tusheti and the high mountain roads of Highland Adjara.
May & Oct
Many routes accessible but conditions vary; mud and early/late snow possible on high passes. Also the ideal, cooler season for the lowland desert tracks of Vashlovani National Park.
Nov – Apr
Most highland passes closed by snow. Winter overlanding in lower elevations possible for experienced operators.

Vehicles
We use high-clearance 4x4 vehicles (Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Xterra, Hilux) with all-terrain tyres, recovery gear, and communication equipment.

Road conditions
Expect a bit of everything — smooth gravel, unpaved mountain tracks, muddy stretches, and shallow river crossings, all part of the fun. No experience is needed on your side: our drivers know these routes in every condition and pick the safe line every time, so you can simply relax and enjoy the ride.

Take the wheel yourself
This is your adventure, so you can be more than a passenger — confident drivers are welcome to take the wheel on suitable sections, with our guide right beside you coaching every river crossing, mud patch and switchback. There is nothing quite like driving these mountains under your own steam.

Fuel & supplies
Remote routes have no petrol stations. We plan fuel stops carefully and carry reserves on longer expeditions.

Accommodation
Family guesthouses in highland villages are a real highlight — simple, warm, and often extraordinary food. On the most remote routes we sometimes camp out instead: sleeping in roof-top tents on the vehicles, cooking meals out in the wild, and gathering around the campfire under the stars.

Common questions

Do I need to be fit for overlanding?
No — overlanding is primarily vehicle-based. You should be comfortable with long hours of rough driving, but no physical exertion is required.
Do I need experience with 4x4 driving?
Not at all. If you choose to take the wheel, your guide is right beside you to talk you through every obstacle and the specifics of handling a 4x4 — no prior off-road experience needed.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Georgia?
Georgia lets foreign visitors drive on their valid national licence, so most guests are fine with the licence they already have. We still recommend bringing an International Driving Permit alongside it — especially if your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet — as it makes any roadside check simpler.
Are the vehicles insured?
Yes — all of our vehicles are fully insured, so you can focus on the adventure while we take care of the cover and paperwork.
Can we combine overlanding with hiking?
Absolutely — many of our best itineraries mix 4x4 access with short treks to viewpoints, villages, or waterfalls you can't reach by road.
