This is Georgia in one unbroken journey — a ten-day overland loop that trades polished tour-bus routes for real roads, real villages, and nights under the stars. From your first evening in Tbilisi's old streets to the medieval fortress-village of Shatili, you'll cross six of the country's most striking regions in a single fully-equipped expedition vehicle, guided by someone who knows these mountains as home rather than a destination. You'll stand inside the cave city of Vardzia, camp above the clouds in green Adjara with the Black Sea glinting far below, and wake beneath Mount Ushba in the tower-country of Svaneti. You'll roll through Racha — one of Georgia's most untouched and quietly beautiful regions — before the drama of Gergeti Trinity Church under Mount Kazbek and the remote stone towers of Khevsureti. It's part road trip, part camping adventure, part cultural pilgrimage: the country's greatest hits and its best-kept secrets, threaded together the way a friend who lived here would drive you. Pricing is per person and varies by group size. Fully guided (our guide drives): €2000 solo in a private vehicle, or from €1500 / €1200 / €1000 per person for 2, 3 or 4 travellers sharing a vehicle. Arrive in Tbilisi and transfer to your hotel in the charming Old Town. In the evening we wander the historic streets and share a traditional Georgian dinner with a glass of local wine.

We leave Tbilisi and cross the scenic Javakheti highlands, stopping at several lakes — including Paravani, the largest in Georgia — and the ruins of Shaori Fortress before passing through Ninotsminda to Vardzia.

A morning exploring the remarkable cave city of Vardzia, one of Georgia's greatest cultural treasures, followed by Rabati Castle. We then head into Adjara, one of the country's greenest regions — up to the mountain resort of Beshumi and the striking Green Lake, where we camp under a sky full of stars.

We explore the Middle Mountain lakes and Khikhani Fortress near the Turkish border, then pass through the small villages of Upper Adjara to the spectacular resort of Gomismta. On a clear day the Black Sea sits in the palm of your hand; when clouds roll in, you stand above the world. We camp for a breathtaking sunset.

We drive north to Svaneti, famous for its history and heritage, visiting Shdugra Waterfall and staying in Becho village beneath the dramatic backdrop of Mount Ushba — one of Georgia's most iconic peaks and a legend among mountaineers.

We explore Mestia, where ancient Svan towers still stand — some now museums you can step inside. From there we continue to Ushguli, a village with more towers than houses, and camp beneath Mount Shkhara, the highest mountain in Georgia.

Leaving Ushguli, we head into evergreen, mountainous Racha, hugging the Greater Caucasus range past old Rachian villages and traditional houses that feel like living heritage. One of Georgia's most authentic and untouched regions — raw nature, quiet, and genuine local life, still largely undiscovered by mass tourism.

Via Satsalike Mountain we reach Chiatura — a paradise for climbers — and visit the monastery perched atop a towering limestone pillar. We continue to Stepantsminda, stopping at Gveleti Waterfall and the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, with Mount Kazbek — the "Queen of Khevi" — rising above.

We travel into remote Khevsureti to Shatili, one of the best-preserved medieval fortress-villages in the Caucasus. Nearby we see the ancient burial site tied to the legend of the plague, where the sick once isolated themselves to protect the village. We camp surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

Common questions

It's an adventurous overland expedition rather than a hard trek. The demanding part is the long days on the road and the rustic, wild-camping nights — not the walking. There's one moderate hike of around 9 km to Shdugra Waterfall and a few shorter walks; the rest is vehicle-based. No technical skills or expedition fitness are required.

No. On the guided trip your local guide handles all the driving, including the rough sections. You just need to be comfortable with long hours in the vehicle, rough tracks, and a few light-to-moderate walks. Off-road experience is only relevant if you choose the self-drive option.

It's a genuine mix. You sleep in hotels in Tbilisi at the start and end, guesthouses in Vardzia, Ghebi and Stepantsminda, a hostel in Becho, and wild camp on four nights — Beshumi, Gomismta, Ushguli and Shatili. All camping and kitchen equipment, including tents, sleeping bags and mats, is provided.

On the guided trip a solo traveller gets a private vehicle; groups of 2–4 share one fully equipped expedition vehicle. Larger parties can be arranged across multiple vehicles — just tell us your group size in the enquiry.

On the fully guided trip our local guide drives and leads the whole expedition. The self-drive option lets you drive your own vehicle in convoy with our guide and runs for a minimum of six people at €1890 per person. Both follow the same route and support.

It suits active families with older children or teenagers who are happy with long drives, rustic camps and changeable mountain weather. Tell us your family's ages and we'll advise honestly and adapt the pace where we can.

They vary a lot. Some days are relatively short with plenty of sightseeing; others are long — Day 8 from Racha to Kazbegi is around 400 km. Total distance across the ten days is roughly 2,000 km. The driving is a core part of the adventure, not just transfers.

The high passes into Racha, Khevsureti and the Adjara resorts are summer-only and mountain weather changes fast. If a road is closed or unsafe, your guide will adjust the route and find the best alternative. Safety always comes first.

All accommodation on the route is included, along with camp meals cooked en route and the welcome dinner in Tbilisi. Entrance tickets to sites such as Vardzia, Rabati and the Chiatura monastery, and meals not listed, are not included. Your final confirmation will spell out exactly what's covered for your departure.

Yes. Travel insurance including emergency evacuation cover is strongly recommended for remote-region and mountain travel. We can suggest providers — just ask.

The published route is our tried-and-tested plan, but road conditions, weather and local events can require adjustments. Your guide will always choose the best alternative and keep you informed.
