Overview

Discover Chaukhi Massif — Kazbegi

The Chaukhi Massif is one of Georgia's most spectacular ranges — sharp rocky peaks, vertical walls, and wild alpine landscapes that have earned it the nickname "the Georgian Dolomites." Its highest summit reaches 3,842 m, with the main Chaukhi peak at 3,688 m. Unlike much of high Georgia, Chaukhi is purely rocky — no glaciers or crevasses, though you may cross snow depending on conditions. This eight-day camp is a real mountaineering experience built to be accessible. No previous climbing experience is needed, and you don't bring technical equipment — a dedicated training day teaches you movement on rock and snow, and certified mountain guides stay with you throughout, focused on safety. From a comfortable alpine base camp beneath the peaks, you'll build up across three graded summits — starting gently on Mt Tikandze, then Mt Javakhishvili and Mt Rcheulishvili — with a reserve day held back for weather or rest. Experienced climbers can request harder routes (4a and above). It's raw, rugged, and unforgettable — the mountains at their wildest, with the technical worries taken care of. Pricing is per person. The full-camp program (with dining tent and full kitchen) runs at €1500 per person for a minimum of 3 guests — the best value and our "from" rate. A reduced version for 1–2 guests, without the dining tent and large kitchen, runs at €2000 for 1 person or €1700 per person for 2. Tell us your group size when you enquire and we'll confirm the exact setup and quote.

Itinerary

Day-by-Day

Arrive in Tbilisi and transfer to your hotel in the Old Town. In the evening we explore the city and share a traditional Georgian dinner with a glass of wine — the perfect introduction to the country.

OvernightTbilisi (hotel)OptionalOld Town evening & dinner

Transfer to Juta, a beautiful mountain village at the foot of the Chaukhi Massif. Part of the luggage is carried to base camp by horses; the camp sits 4 km from the village, near a river and surrounded by stunning alpine scenery. Everything is prepared for you (except personal gear) — a large dining tent, a fully equipped kitchen tent, and a toilet tent. In the evening we review the plan for the days ahead.

Our first summit day, on a relatively easier route to warm up and adapt to altitude and terrain.

FAQ

Common questions

No. This camp is built to be accessible to beginners — a dedicated training day teaches you movement on rock and snow, certified guides stay with you throughout, and the summits progress gently from Grade 2 upward. You just need good general fitness and a head for adventure.

Good general fitness is important — this is real mountaineering at altitude, with long summit days on rocky terrain. You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with sustained uphill effort and full days out. The reserve day helps with rest and recovery.

No — all necessary technical mountaineering equipment is provided and safety-checked. You bring personal items: sturdy mountain boots, warm and waterproof layers, a sleeping bag and mat, sunglasses, headlamp and the like (see the full list).

These are alpine route grades. Grade 2 is straightforward mountaineering terrain (our warm-up summit); 3A and 3B add steeper, more technical rock; 4a and above are harder lines for experienced climbers, available on request. Your guide matches routes to your level.

No — the Chaukhi Massif is purely rocky, with no glaciers or crevasses. You may cross snow depending on conditions, which is one reason the training day covers snow technique.

Base camp sits about 4 km from Juta village, by a river beneath the peaks. It has a large dining tent, a fully equipped kitchen tent, and a toilet tent, with luggage carried in by horses. Camp meals are provided. You sleep in tents — bring a sleeping bag and mat.

Mountain weather is central to safety, so the itinerary has a reserve day built in. If conditions turn, your guide will reshuffle the summit days, use the reserve day, or choose a safer alternative. Safety always comes first.

Yes — experienced climbers can request harder lines (4a and above). Tell us your level in the enquiry (there's a "Preferred level" option) and the guides will plan accordingly.

Yes. The full-camp program (with dining tent and full kitchen) needs a minimum of 3 guests at €1500 per person. For 1–2 guests we run a reduced setup without the dining tent and large kitchen, at €2000 (1 person) or €1700 per person (2 people).

Yes — camp meals at base camp are included (full board on the mountain), along with the welcome dinner in Tbilisi. Extra drinks and meals outside the itinerary are not included.

Travel insurance with mountaineering cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended for this high-alpine terrain. We can suggest providers — just ask.

The arrival transfer to your Tbilisi hotel is included. Base camp sits high beneath the peaks and the summits reach 3,400–3,700 m; the training and acclimatization day plus the gentle progression are designed to help you adapt safely to the altitude.
