Overview

Discover Imereti — near Kutaisi

Melouri Cave is wild caving in its truest form — no handrails, no walkways, no coloured lights. Just you, a helmet and headlamp, a certified guide, and the living dark of the Georgian karst near Kutaisi. This is an "active" cave: you'll cross an underground river, pick your way past rock formations, and move through chambers where the only sound is dripping water and your own breath. It's an adventure, but an accessible one — no previous caving experience is required, and your guide leads every step, reading the cave and keeping the group safe. You'll get a little muddy, you'll scramble a little, and you'll come out grinning. You stay mostly dry — the boots we provide keep your feet dry, and you only step across the water rather than walk through it. A perfect half-day of real underground exploration for anyone based in or passing through Imereti — and a strong add-on to a western-Georgia trip. Melouri has many possible routes, so the difficulty and length are tailored to your group — your guide picks the line that fits your fitness, experience and appetite for adventure. You'll spend roughly 3–5 hours underground. You can join from Kutaisi as a roughly five-hour experience, or from Tbilisi as a long full day (Kutaisi is about 3.5–4 hours' drive each way). Choose your pickup point in the enquiry. Not recommended for those with serious claustrophobia or significant mobility limits — see the FAQ.

FAQ

Common questions

No — this trip is beginner-friendly. A certified caving guide leads every step, explains technique in the safety briefing, and keeps the group safe throughout. You just need reasonable general fitness and a sense of adventure.

A certified caving guide leads the whole experience, with all safety equipment provided and safety-checked. Every trip is private — your group only — and starts with a briefing.

Not really. You don't walk through the water — you only step across it, and because we provide boots, your feet stay dry too. You might get slightly wet while crawling through the lower sections, but only a little. Overall you stay mostly dry.

You spend roughly 3–5 hours underground. Melouri has many possible routes, so your guide tailors both the difficulty and the length to your group — a shorter, easier line for first-timers, or a longer, more challenging route if you want more adventure.

There are some lower and tighter sections, though much of the route is through walking-height passages and chambers. It is a genuine wild cave, so it is not recommended for those with serious claustrophobia. Tell us any concerns in the enquiry.

You should be reasonably fit and comfortable scrambling over uneven ground in the dark. Please ask us about minimum age and suitability when you enquire, and note any health or mobility concerns in the form.

Wear old sportswear you don't mind getting a little muddy. Bring a change of clothes, a warm layer for afterwards, water and a snack. Helmet, headlamp, boots and caving overalls are all provided.

Yes. From Kutaisi it's about a five-hour experience. From Tbilisi it becomes a long full day — Kutaisi is roughly 3.5–4 hours' drive each way — so expect an early start and a full day out. Choose your pickup point in the enquiry.

Yes — every trip we run is private, just for you and your companions. No strangers, no mixed groups.

No — rain and bad weather don't affect Melouri Cave. Thanks to the cave's structure, even during heavy rain the chance of flooding is effectively zero, so the trip runs as planned in virtually any weather.

It can suit older children and teenagers who are comfortable getting a little muddy and being underground in the dark, but it is a real wild cave rather than a gentle show-cave. Tell us your group's ages and we'll advise honestly.
