Tbilisi has been the capital of Georgia since the 5th century, when King Vakhtang Gorgasali is said to have followed a wounded deer to its warm sulfur springs and built his palace here. Today the city earns its reputation as one of the most welcoming and creative capitals in the former Soviet space — a tight-knit Old Town of carved wooden balconies, domed sulfur baths, the cliff-top Narikala Fortress, and a restaurant and wine bar scene that has made Tbilisi a serious food destination. Main international gateway

Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) is Georgia's main hub — good connections from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Most tours start here.

Getting around

The Old Town and Rustaveli Avenue are walkable. Metro and marshrutka cover the wider city. For day trips, private transfer is the most flexible option.

Where to stay

Old Town (Kala) and Vera are the best neighbourhoods for first-time visitors — close to the sights, restaurants and the sulfur bath district.

Currency & cash

Georgia uses the Lari (GEL). ATMs are plentiful in Tbilisi; card payments are widely accepted. Many restaurants still prefer cash.
