Why This Region

The Historic Heart of Georgia

Shida Kartli — Inner Kartli — is the ancient core of Georgian statehood, the fertile valley of the Mtkvari River that connects Tbilisi to the western and northern highlands. The region's headline site is Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest urban settlements in the Caucasus — a cave city hewn from a sandstone ridge above the Mtkvari that was inhabited from the Iron Age through the medieval period. Nearby Gori, birthplace of Stalin, offers a fascinatingly complex museum; Surami and the Likhi Range mark the watershed between eastern and western Georgia. The region is most often transited rather than explored, which means its remarkable sites remain genuinely uncrowded.

Practical Notes for the Mountains

Easy day trip from Tbilisi
Uplistsikhe and Gori are 1.5 h from Tbilisi — one of the most rewarding day trips from the capital, usually combined with Mtskheta.
Uplistsikhe safety
The cave city has uneven rock surfaces and no railings in places. Comfortable, grippy shoes matter more than a guide for navigating the site.
The Stalin museum
The Gori museum is deliberately thought-provoking — it neither glorifies nor condemns. It's one of the most interesting museums in the Caucasus.
Combine with Mtskheta
Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta (UNESCO) are on the same highway — combine both into one day for a deep dive into ancient Georgian history.
